The fun activities available in and around Leavenworth doesn’t stop with the rivers and mountains, as the city and surrounding area are full of fun as well. Here are our top town adventures in Leavenworth.

Town Parks/Swimming Pools/Blackbird Island

Front Street Park is in the middle of town, and really just consists of a large lawn area, maypole, and adjoining gazebo, where on occasion there will be actual yodeling performances! You can’t miss it! It’s a great place to take your treats to sit outside in the shade and enjoy the festivities. A short walk toward the Wenatchee River from the main part of town you’ll find Waterfront Park and Blackbird Island, where you can walk along wide trails alongside the river, with a playground, pedestrian bridge, and access to the river. Further out you can find Enchantment Park (see notes next paragraph). There’s also a family-friendly public pool.

Pump Track/Skateboard Park

Enchantment Park is a nice walk from downtown through Waterfront Park/Blackbird Island or a quick drive. There are large baseball and soccer fields, basketball courts, a great kids playground, a bike pump track and skate park.  Our kids love the pump track – the best we’ve found in Washington – and can easily spend an hour or more here.

Horseback Riding/Ranches

Horseback riding options are plentiful around Leavenworth, with the three main recommended options Icicle Outfitter & Guides, Eagle Creek Ranch and Wild At Heart Horse Rides (see websites).  Another option for younger children are the in-town carriage rides, or for a local hayride followed by a BBQ check out Red-Tail Canyon Farm (about 3 miles north of Leavenworth) or visit Refuge River Ranch for a low-key day on the ranch visiting with a variety of rescue animals.  Finally, don’t miss the reindeer at the Leavenworth Reindeer Farm, open all year and with treats and drinks for the kids included in the price of admission.

Mini-Golf

Two of the local Inns both have great mini-gold putt-putt courses that are open to the public – the Enzian Inn has the Enzian Falls Championship Putting Course which is quite challenging, and Icicle Village Resort has a great mini golf course better suited to younger kids.

Leavenworth Stores, Shoppes and Treats!

Gingerbread, candy, taffy, and ice cream shops galore! Ok, we can get a little carried away here, so we’ll just list out a few favorites and other notable places for delicious treats about town:

  • The Gingerbread Factory.  We go every time, kids LOVE gingerbread and selecting their own design. They also serve other treats and tasty sandwiches.
  • The Taffy Shop.  Watch the taffy machine, browse the dozens of flavors, marvel at how they can make taffy taste just like watermelon!
  • Whistlepunk Ice Cream. Yum! Lots of unique flavors with local, homemade freshness and always good.
  • Schocolat. European-style chocolatier handcrafting fine chocolates for more refined tastes. But don’t worry, there’s also the…
  • Fudge Hut. Enough said – fudge of all sizes and flavors.
  • Danish Bakery. Bavarian-styled baked goods and deserts – strudel anyone?
  • Nutcracker Museum. With the world’s largest collection of over 7,000 Nutcrackers it’s easy to spend lots of time exploring the history and variety of Nutcrackers that have been made for centuries around the world – and a surprising favorite for kids, as well.

Restaurants. Lots of great places to choose from here:

  • Munchen Haus. Almost a must stop – for beer and brats and kid-friendly fare as well, with giant pretzels and outdoor seating. Welcome to Bavaria!
  • Leavenworth Sausage Garten.  Across Front Street from Munchen Haus, but equally good brats, beers and pretzels with outdoor seating. The serve the locally-made Cured sausages (associated with the neighboring Italian restaurant Visconti’s), which you can pick up fresh to go (they have convenient insulated carry bags) if you have a rental house with it’s own grill.
  • Andreas Keller. Good sit-down style restaurant serving standard Bavarian fare.
  • SOUTH.  If you’ve had your fill of sausages (if possible), check out this great restaurant serving Latin-styled cuisine and drinks – including, and I’m not kidding here, canned margaritas to go (and they’re delicious)!
